With Brexit negotiations still gridlocked, the UK remains a member of the EU, and therefore the EU Elections on May 23rd give us an opportunity to vote for 6 UK South West Region MEPs. Our region currently has one Labour MEP, Clare Moody, who is standing for re-election; it would be good to see more.
The ‘purdah’ regulations for the pre-election period also apply to these EU Elections, and this meant that our SE Cornwall Labour CLP Meeting, scheduled at the Church Rooms for April 27th could not take place, as all political meetings are suspended during the ‘purdah’ period. It has been re-scheduled for the evening of Wednesday June 5th – this will be confirmed to all Members and Supporters nearer the date.
Fortunately, our Social and Fundraiser at Lostwithiel Social Club on Saturday May 4th is not affected, and we’re looking forward to a really good night of live music, with the Gumbo Flyers, plus bar, raffle and pasty supper. Tickets are £10 from Alice in Scandiland shop or on the door, but going fast – all are welcome and hope to see you there!
This spring has been a frustrating time for many Labour supporters, especially those of us who voted to remain in the EU and would like to see a confirmatory People’s Vote on the Brexit issue, as the stalemate and lack of clarity continues. Nevertheless, the antics of the extreme right of the Conservative Party and the wilful neglect of essential public services and amenities, which we see all around us, can only strengthen our resolve to fight for a better society.
